What is the Green Communities programme?

The Green Communities team is on hand to support community groups with project activities and to provide information and guidance to groups. Groups can apply for a small annual grant to go towards their Green Communities activities.

Examples of typical Green Communities activities include the following:

  • Development of a community garden to promote local food production and to bring communities together
  • Development of a wildlife area
  • Regular clean ups and conservation work (eg marram grass planting)
  • Sensitive clearance work (eg clearing a neglected area of land so that it provides a green space for people to enjoy and an enhanced habitat for wildlife)
  • Erection and maintenance of bird, bat, hedgehog, owl etc boxes
  • Management of invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed, Rhododendron, etc

To see a list of current groups, go to the 'groups' section of our website. If your community group would like to get involved in Green Communities, please contact us or see here for further information. Please note, Green Communities is only available in the Interreg Region of Ireland and Wales see here for a map.
