The historic walled garden within the grounds of the Santry Demesne public park had been closed to visitors for the past few years as there simply weren’t the funds to maintain them. However, a determined group of local residents banded together and have started a community garden on the site with the aim of restoring it to its former glory. The 4 ½ acre plot is split into three sections and the Group are focusing initially on the top section which they are cultivating as a vegetable garden and the middle section as a heritage orchard. Of course of all this takes money and An Taisce kindly donated funds for the purchase of seeds, fertilisers, and supplementary materials for a polytunnel. We also hope to buy some heritage variety fruit trees to supplement the Tree Sponsorship scheme we have to get our Orchard planted. This support gave the Group a great kick start and they are confident that 2011 will see a bountiful harvest for Garden members. In time, as funding and energy allows, the formal front section will be a green area for picnics and events with flower and shrub borders. So not only will the Santry Community Garden offer its members a great opportunity to train and garden, it will be a real amenity for all visitors to the park and local residents.
