Sandycove Tidy Towns and Coast Care

Residents in Sandycove, both young and old, who recognized the true value of their unique social, cultural, historical, architectural and marine environment joined together to form a group whose aim it was to protect and preserve this valuable amenity into the future and thus, Sandycove Tidy Towns & Coastcare Group was born.

The Group began modestly organizing initiatives which would assist in the protection and enhancement of the local environment generally. These activities were achieved through cleaning and maintenance projects in public spaces, floral displays, tree planting, street furniture and regular ‘tidy ups’ in the area.

Fortunately, over time, due to our success in Tidy Towns and other competitions, a raised awareness of the value of our local assets emerged and a sense of pride and place amongst the local and business communities grew.

STT&CG built on this new awareness and together with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, An Taisce, local schools, sports clubs and businesses in the area, a number of information/education evenings were organized to take place in our newly built community hall. These evenings were very well attended and focused on our local biodiversity and how the community could participate in its protection and preservation. We think globally and act locally.

STT&CG’s latest initiative is for the design and erection of a public information notice board in a prominent position on the seafront in Sandycove. This notice board will outline a heritage trail, incorporating all of the social, cultural, architectural and natural amenities in the area. It will also provide information on Sandycove’s unique biodiversity, natural and marine environment.
